Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on April 4, 1972, in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Scott was raised an sole daughter by her grandmother. Scott completed her studies at her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After that, she attended Temple University. She studied secondary education over there while working two jobs. She hoped to be an English teacher in high school. However, she was not able to achieve the dream after three years of studying and becoming a teaching assistant, she left college. Being a poet started performing, she was able to perform in live poetry recitals. Then she joined along with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to create the group. You Got Me is the outcome of their collaboration. During Roots performance, she revealed herself as an artist. After that, she began working with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She also gained experience as an actor on The Canada touring of Broadway musical Rent. She was the first signed artist on the Hidden Beach Recordings label.
